Talking English: New Zealand

08.07.2011 Von: Jana Freese

New Zealand – dream country. Lots of Germans feel the urge to take off to the other side of the world. Might that be something for you as well? If so, you’ll find important tips here on studying and working in New Zealand.

So you’d like to study in New Zealand? There is a range of possibilities there, just as there is in Germany.

An interesting one is so-called „Study Abroad“. That is a stay as a guest student, during which you spend a maximum of two terms there at a place of higher education. While doing so, you can study across subject-area boundaries, thus also attending courses in subjects other than your core subjects.

However, whether your studies are given recognition in Germany is something that you need to clarify on an individual basis with the university in Germany. You do not receive a formal qualification for completing your studies within the context of „Study Abroad”. Alternatively, with your Abitur school-leaving certificate, you may apply for a course of studies which, when you complete it, leads to your first qualification in higher education.

How do you apply?

For a successful application to a place of higher education you need the proof of your attainments from school and any other academic attainments, the letter of reference from a teacher, proof of your good command  of English and a letter stating your motivations.

Turning to finance

Studying in New Zealand is subject to fees. The amount depends on the chosen subject area. Usually the cost is between 3,000 and 7,000 euros per term. If you are receiving a grant from the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) or the Institut Ranke-Heinemann, these fees are reduced to about one third of what they would otherwise be.

Student visa

In addition you need a student visa. This also entitles you to earn money alongside your studies. During your studies you may work for up to twenty hours  per month and indeed work full time during the holidays.

Higher education fairs for those interested

If your curiosity is awakened, the Institut Ranke-Heinemann is a good address for you. It regularly offers information days through-out Germany on the subject of studying in New Zealand.

New Zealand: Worl & travel

So you’d like to go to New Zealand and get to know the people and the country in the context of travel and work? We have gathered in more precise information relevant for you.

„Work and Travel” is the combination of travelling and working. You travel through New Zealand, financing your travelling adventure with jobs. In the context of travel and work, the duration of the stay amounts to at least six weeks and a maximum of one year.

Depending on your interests and abilities, you can take any job, from helping with the harvest to being a waiter. You organize yourself during the trip. Before it all starts, you need a „working holiday visa” to be able to travel around the country freely and do various jobs.

The application for such a visa should be made at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance. You should also make provision for having enough money. Flight tickets and the approval of the visa cost around 2,100 euros.

There are a great many organizations which organize such a work-and-travel trip together with you in advance. That way you have a contact person throughout your stay, you complete training for applications, receive a tax number and get support in looking for somewhere to live.

In terms of jobs the possibilities are almost unlimited but, of course, they also essentially depend on your command of the language. Work and Travel programs offer a virtual contact exchange on the Web for getting to know people.

So you’ll quickly find people who are on your wavelength. Enjoy!
